BSL lessons for schools – Learn British Sign Language in primary schools

RAD is proud to partner with Signature on The School of Signs , a national programme delivering structured BSL lessons for schools. Designed for Key Stage 2 pupils, the programme makes it easy to learn British Sign Language in primary schools through engaging, curriculum-aligned video content.

As a deaf-led, deaf centred organisation, RAD leads on lesson planning, on-screen teaching, and linguistic quality assurance. Our deaf teachers deliver authentic British Sign Language lessons for primary schools, ensuring children learn accurate BSL while developing awareness of deaf culture and community.

Why learn British Sign Language in school?

Learning BSL in schools is about more than learning some signs, it is about connection, empowerment confidence and understanding.

For deaf children

The School of Signs offers a chance to learn British Sign Language in a school setting, especially for those who may not have had the opportunity before. Seeing BSL on screen through strong representation by deaf role models and knowing it is part of school life helps build pride, confidence and an understanding to communicate and self-advocate.

For hearing children

Learning BSL in a fun and engaging way ensures good communication with deaf peers and opens up greater and respect for deaf culture. It helps children see that communication comes in many forms and that everyone can learn something new together.

For schools

Bringing British Sign Language into school life helps create welcoming, inclusive environments where children feel valued, understood and better connected to each other.

Growing BSL learning together

RAD continues to work with Signature to create even more BSL lessons for primary schools. Together we’re reaching more schools, more children and helping make British Sign Language a joyful part of learning.
